A view of Vinegar Hill in Enniscorthy, Wexford. Vinegar Hill overlooks the town and was the largest camp and headquarters of the rebels of 1798 who controlled County Wexford for thirty days against the vastly superior British forces. Insurgents encamped on the hill flew a banner from the windmill but were overcome by General Gerald Lake who stormed the hill on 21st June, replacing the banner with the English Royal Standard.

One of my favourite areas in Enniscorthy is St. John’s Mill. It is slowly being taken down to make way for 86 apartments and a 71 bedroom hotel. I’m not sure if this remaining part of the building will become part of the hotel but I hope so. It’s sad to see historic areas overtaken by progress but that’s the way it goes, cities and towns spreading ever outwards.
